Cleaning a Final Cut Pro EDL and creating a source list

The following is an example how to use Textfilter in a real-world context. If you did not read the Userguide yet, you may want to do that before, so that you can follow each step below.

You can build the project following the explications, but you can also open the project (which is a textfile) from this link FinalCutProProject. If you are reading this from internet, click on the link, save it as a textfile and then open it with Textfilter.

The problem

You received CMX3600 EDLs from an offline editor who worked with Final Cut Pro. The lists have a lot of comments which your video editor cannot read. Also, you want to create source lists to prepare the online editing and to be sure that you will have all tapes.

Solution

Open a new textfilter project. An Input filter is already specified. Remove it, because we will input multiple files.

Add a new Input Folder filter. Select the folder with the edit lists. You can download the editlists EP30CMXtrk1.edl, EP30CMXtrk2.edl, EP30CMXtrk3.edl and put them into a folder, if you are using this example online.

Add a Skip Comments filter. After inspecting the file, you will see that there are different kinds of comments. Add one line in the exclusion list for all comments end effect information you want to have removed. This depends on your editor.

Also check the Skip also empty lines option, so it will remove the empty lines between each event.

Add an Output Folder filter and select a new folder called Clean. Depending on your editor, you may want to use the CRLF line separator menu option

Push the Play In Out Button (with the sign |>|). The cleaned lists are saved to the new folder.

Add a Source List filter. Go through the files. You will have the list of sources, sorted by name. You will see that the third list will not have any sources, because it contains only auxiliary and black edits.

Add an Output Folder filter and select a new folder called Sources.

Push the Play In Out Button. That's it.

Save the project as Finalcutproproject for later uses.

To go further

You may want a common source list for all EDLs. In this case, use an Input Folder to File filter and

You may modify the script and replace the Input File filters with Input Folder filters. Doing this, you just will have to fill the appropriate folders with the input files, run the project (eg going to the last filter in the list and press the Play In Out button) and take up the processed lists from the output folder.
